The Story of our Patio

Mother-in-Law House Patio

A record in words and pictures
After about two years of planning, negotiating and red tape we are about ready to begin construction on our new patio.

September 21, 2005 This is the area where the patio will be built:

Utilities have been marked, the only sign of construction.

November 3, 2005
The leaves are turning and still we are waiting for all the legal mumbo-jumbo involved in getting a permit. Lawyers are involved so, by default, it makes no sense to me. There is something to do with utilities access.
Soon it will be too cold to start construction.

January 9, 2006
Winter has come and the cold weather precludes starting construction. With any luck; we will start construction in March.

March 6, 2006
Well, it's March, and construction is scheduled to start this week.
It's windy in March
Could it be true? some parts are in desperate need of repair.

March 11, 2006
Surveying the site, a very positive development. Our patio is supposed to have three tiers so that each one is level and the back isn't three feet off the ground.

March 28, 2006
Construction has begun! at last there is actual digging.

Notice that the kitchen porch has been half removed, which means going out the front door every time you need half a dozen tomatoes from the walk-in cooler.Of course, it's a huge mess but eventually all this will be our patio
The mess even blocks Donna's parking spot, this is serious.

March 29, 2006
Things are getting really torn up. We can only hope this mess will turn into the Patio we have envisioned. We have been told that this part of the job will take two weeks.
This trench is where the outer retaining wall will be.

April 4, 2006
Not much going on outside lately. Work appears to be done on random days, sometimes workers are here bright and early, some days not at all.

April 7, 2006
Work progresses, walls go up, and sometime come back down, but progress is in a forward direction. We hoping that the entry way isn't this big a mess on Easter.
The music is ready for the patio sound system and parts are on order.

April 19, 2006
Tax day and Easter are both over and I have time to take more photos. Our entry way is now a complete mess. Customers and anyone with nice shoes need to come in the Main Street door. Bricks are about to be laid on the back tier. Pfaff Electric is doing a great job putting in the lighting, I wish every thing went that fast.

April 20, 2006
Work is really starting to roll.
One tier is already paved with bricks.
Our entryway is getting a new look, and the parking lot / quarry is starting to empty.

April 21, 2006
The end of the masonry phase is drawing near Our entryway is looking different; notice the reduction in steps.
Electrical outlets are going in The last tier to be done!

April 22, 2006
Tables and chairs have been added, with new umbrellas. People where sitting in them even with the patio unfinished!

May 8, 2006
Our iron fence that will delineate the patio is going in. Workers cut cores of stone out of the wall to put in fence post.
Still some work to be done

May 9, 2006
Greenery is arriving for landscaping.                                                     Urns flank the entryway.
